Does Durban get snow? The SA Weather Services (Saws) have quashed claims that snow fell in Ashburton and areas around Durban last weekend. This as people from Ashburton and Hillcrest areas posted videos of what appeared to be snow falling there on Saturday. Ruari Harrison, whose family has lived in Ashburton for over 30 years, said they had never seen snow there before. “But it was definitely snow. It was light and fluffy and fell slowly. It lasted for five to 10 minutes. Later it turned to sleet. There was rain in between.” In a forwarded WhatsApp video, a man at Hillcrest speaks as snow falls quite heavily around him. “Snow fell in these places over the south western parts of KZN because we had two synoptic systems in place, namely a cold front passing by after the passage of another cold front from the previous day.” SA Weather Services “It is snowing. It’s coming down quite heavily. This is really a first in history. Look at all this snow coming down.”Asked for historical snow data for KwaZulu-Natal, Saws said they don’t keep records of snow.
