What happened to Madoff’s wife?

Bernie Madoff’s wife, Ruth Madoff, faced intense scrutiny and criticism in the aftermath of her husband’s fraud, but she was never charged with any crimes related to his scheme. However, Ruth did forfeit nearly $80 million in assets that were seized by the government as part of the Madoff case, including her homes, jewelry, and other luxury items.

After her husband’s arrest, Ruth initially remained by his side, but their relationship became strained in the years that followed. In 2012, Ruth told CBS News that she and Bernie had attempted suicide together by taking a handful of pills on Christmas Eve in 2008, shortly after his fraud was revealed.

Despite the scandal, Ruth continued to defend her husband and maintain that she had no knowledge of his fraud. In 2020, she published a memoir titled “The Other Madoff: Ruth’s Story,” in which she described her life before, during, and after her husband’s downfall.
